They certainly don't learn much from toy software written for toy algorithms, '70s compiler theory, etc.
Top-tier universities don't even have professors who can code properly (picrel for Harvard is the tip of the iceberg), let alone teach more complex theory (or beginner theory, for that matter -- there's some Stanford lecture on YouTube in which the professor confuses ones'-complement and sign-magnitude representation).
It's different with shit like math and physics. If you study those at a top-tier university, you're generally getting high-IQ competence.
