The theory that was proposed, was that there were deep water methane (natural gas) deposits frozen on the ocean floor, and sometimes these would rupture and decompress as they came to the surface
This would create a situation where there was a bubbling, very low density surface where shops could lose bouyancy and sink suddenly.
There was an added effect, it was an oxygen poor environment, so any planes flying over would stall, or even ignite the air.
It seems that it would be a similar situation here, except it's already ignited
