Some over the top claims, a bit too much but the idea is interesting.

What if all of it is a continuous interplay between order and disorder balancing eachother out. Life as a phenomenon as a whole, but also in different reductive stages, atomic level, molecular level, cellular level, micro-level, macro-level. This also ties in with the view of consciousness as just a phenomenon akin to gravity, which isn't generated by life, but rather is attracted to/by self-referencing systems of order, with greater magnitudes attracting greater concentrations of consciousness. In humans, to such a degree that we're actually conscious to the level we are, compared to other life forms.
