What is the medical/scientific reason for taking into account cultural tendencies before diagnosis (in psychiatry)?

No oncologist would claim your cancer is invalid based on and if many of your coworkers during the seventies nowadays cough blood just as you do, since this would just be part of the asbestos mine culture. It would make sense to think a vulgar disease is just as much a disease as if it was rare.
