My experience is that you need a PhD for the interesting jobs, it is a degree for research and development. And do postdocs, at least one in a foreign country. And make sure you learn the language.

I had many reasons. First of all you are still young, most likely have no attachments and should be free to travel wherever. Postdoc pay is bad so you have little to lose in going elsewhere. It is also a good time to go abroad to widen your horizons beyond technology alone and your brain is still young enough to pick up a new language or two. Knowing foreign languages is a major plus if you go to industry. In any case, life is also about new experiences and a postdoc abroad ticks all the boxes.

This is also about networking, and going from a university to a different place builds more network, perhaps in a place that is more international. This was the case for me, going from red brick to a large national research lab in Japan. This was a fantastic experience, can recommend.

It is also important that you leave your professor. If you stay you will always be treated as his "student" forever. You will get some early promotions, sure, but you will also stagnate. There is also the risk of increasing academic inbreeding, and I have seen that myself. They had to interview me but knew they would reject me, at the time I was too naive to understand this so I was annoyed they hired a guy who was not even finished with his PhD over me who already had a PhD. In hindsight I think it was a good thing I didn't get that job.

I did! And about a third of my unmarried colleagues got married there too. As a postdoc you will have sufficient social standing to be avoid being immediately rejected by her parents. Knowing some Japanese will be a bonus. That also helps in understanding the culture which is rather complex.

One of my friends got married to a girl from a samurai family. It is no exaggeration to say that her family were a bit sceptical but she was really determined. Still, to overcome the scepticism they invited some of his friends/colleagues to make a good representation of his background. Most of us had a PhD and most also spoke Japanese and also had Japanese business cards. We might not have been *entirely* representative of his country, but at least her family was relieved.

Grad student here. Just got a part time student contract position in my field. I’ll mostly just be doing work they need done around the office so that the full time employees can focus on their jobs instead of sweeping, but I’ll also be getting paid to shadow them and making good connections. The boss seems really chill and wants me to give me the experience to easily get a job when I graduate. I was thinking of asking him if he’d be open to changing my title to something other than Student Contract Worker, so that it doesn’t read as such on my resume. For the record, most of the people that work there only have a bachelors, so I don’t think it’s completely unreasonable.

I'm a physicist and thankfully knew what was ahead of me in a physics PhD career. So I went the engineering PhD route and that was a fantastic decision.

I also have to give lectures for my money, so I automated them with Jupyter Notebooks and some add-ons, plus videos and a forum where students can help each other before I have to jump in.

It's stressful in the beginning when you have to get used to the workload and put some effort in to automate stuff, but then it's 9/10. Would recommend for the business contacts alone.

Oh and if you give lectures and you're good at it and care for the students, students will care for you too.

Absolutely. Physicists generally have a good reputation among engineers and they respect us a lot, although I met quite a few students who would easily outsmart physicists, including me. Physicists often feel superior to engineers and deem them lackeys (many of them really are), but that does a whole lot of them injustice. Working together can be extremely fruitful, as they have much more real-world experience than we do.

I'm not sure how the system works im (I assume) the US. Here, if he has a bachelor's, he can change to whatever to get a master's. He just might have to take some undergrad courses again. Is that an option?

Make an effort to understand the machinations of different proofs. You don't need to memorize them, but you should still have a general idea of what a proof entails.

Do assignments with friends -- it is very easy for people (at least me) to get stuck in a specific way of thinking (I'm going to prove this using this tactic because I can't think of anything else!). Don't be afraid to ask for help, but don't rely on them. Generally I think one should try for at least an hour on a problem before asking for any major hints.

Read math in your spare time. You don't need to bust your ass since 5 pages of hard math can take a few hours to get through depending on your comfort with the material.

You should do practice problems overall, but especially for computationally heavy classes. It's very easy to only learn the theory and get broadsided by exams with little theory (for me and 90% of my class this was ODEs).

Experiment to find a different area of math that you like. Don't worry too much about grades -- the happiest people I know don't give a hoot about their grades and do well because they just like the material.

Make friends with people outside of math. It can be nice to get different perspectives on fields, and helps you maintain a more balanced view of the world or smtn.

Idk man I'm kind of the same, I work normal length workdays and then do other stuff, I never work weekends unless it's critical and if so I usually take a weekday off. I'm doing a PhD, starting my third year, and as far as I can tell I'm more or less where I'm supposed to be although corona and other issues outside my control set me back somewhat. I do constantly hear other people bitching about working for stupid long hours which makes me insecure.

But then I think back to undergrad when people were going on about studying 80h a week and then I'd see then browsing facebook or chatting to their friends in the library for about 8h a day (which was when I was studying). I honestly think if you're not fucking around and do work that actually requires focus and effort that 8h a day is about as much as most people have in them. People then pad that out with whatever bullshit. Exceptions apply, of course.

I am a student at a German university, studying computer science. The uni isn't "known" for its CS program, but its a university nevertheless.

How much of a difference does it make to study at a uni like KIT or a university like Johannes Gutenberg university in Mannheim for example?

Should I switch to a TU9 uni if I can? I'm in my 2nd semester next semester.

It's true the core of your contribution reflects creativity, but turning an idea into a thesis / papers / funding is mostly grunt work. Someone has to do it, and it has to be done well. The best scientists I know are more hyper-focused than brilliant -- it's the only way they can slog 10 hours a weekday, 5 hours a day on weekends towards a single idea or a pair of ideas.

Just want to add that getting a job after astronomy isn't as dire as you make out. Sure there are fewer academic positions, but I don't know anyone who struggled to find work. Also since astronomy is literally just working with data, you can spin your skills as a "data scientist" and earn those FAANG bucks

I'm currently studying physics and computer science at KIT.
The KIT physics faculty is ranked very highly internationally but I think this is the result of aggressive filtering rather than good education: the courses were very hard and the help I got was rather limited.
Similarly some of the courses for computer science seemed relatively hard (especially some of the math courses) but I think the CS education I got was very good (not that I have a comparison to other universities).
I don't know how much the university you went to matters for academia.
For industry positions I think actual job experience is more important but do check if my understanding is correct.

I'm contemplating transferring to a TU9 as well, because some of my peers kept crying stuff such as; "This isn't a TU! Why would they make the test so hard!" When they saw that two modules had high failure quotas, or they found something too hard.

Basically they view their education as inferior, and thus rationalize that it's "just" a normal uni CS course.

"It should be easier, compared to the TU9!"- they say.

Are they correct? I don't want to waste my talents if this were the case. It honestly hurts my pride every time someone says that unironically, and expect to get treated more leniently.

My uni is comparable to the JGU mentioned before.

Sorry for the wall text. I'm posting this here, because I have nowhere else to gather information, and you guys tend not to sugar coat the truth. Just venting.

I think the most important question is: how much do you care about the theory behind CS?
I think that I could have learned the practical aspects of CS without much of a problem by just using the internet; for the theoretical aspects there was a clear benefit from attending lectures/tutorials though.
If people complain about CS at KIT it's usually that there is too much focus on math/theory.

Another consideration: are the sub-fields of CS that you are interested in prevalent at your current university?
Some fields like robotics need relatively large amounts of funding and are more prevalent at the more prestigious universities.

Some other considerations:
-As far as I know the difference between universities are relatively small for bachelor's degrees. For master's degrees and PhDs the differences become more important.
-The KIT CS department likes to employ bachelor students as teachers for the bachelor tutorials.
-Linux is very prevalent at KIT (at least in physics and CS).
-I think KIT does not have enough physical workspaces for students to use between lectures.
-The KIT mensa is not very good, particularly if you're vegetarian or vegan.
-KIT offers supplementary language courses, my experience has been good.
-KIT accessability is good by train, not so good by car.

I'm a Venezuelan dude with EU double nationality, as in I am a Venezuelan citizen but I also I'm an EU citizen with full rights and so on.

I'm about to finish my degree in EE with 2 minors in math, so I'm looking for grad school options in Europe, mostly want to do my masters on applied and computational mathematics but I could also do it on systems and signals.

I'm currently looking at Sweden and Germany as options, mainly Sweden.

Firstly, I would like to know where I have a better shot at life, as in where I have the easiest time getting accepted to the programs, finding work, etc. wherever I move id stay forever and my gf would be joining me, but she would mostly be coming to work.

Lastly, right now my favorite program is the applied and computational mathematics masters in KTH Stockholm, How hard is getting admitted to that one? I have average GPA (With excellent grades in course specific classes for both applied math and systems and signals), Can get excellent recommendation letters, I would write a killer letter of intent, I have both research and work experience (did an internship in an automation company for a year and I'm currently working with the head of the statistics dept in my uni on some damn cool data analysis research) and a bunch of extracurricular stuff (founded my own business, was in the student council, etc).

I know this is quite a lot but some help would be dearly appreciated.

Pastebin is a bit inconvenient. HTML and Markdown are better.

Both were set with a 1 year expire date, just to avoid old pastes to clog the search results. I guess it will take about a year of inputs before is properly fleshed out. This general is a little slow now but I think it will gain momentum.

That was sad.
We just got some coverage over in >>>/sci/sqt so we will probably gain attention over time. It is night here in Europe and the autosage will mean this probably dies tonight.
