If Musk dumped tens of billions of Tesla stock people would lose their minds, this is a nice way to get less exposure without rocking the boat too much. People don't understand that Musk has basically zero cash though, he doesn't have 40B just lying around that could have been used for R&D or bribes or hookers and blow or whatever else people think he should have bought instead.
Also, I'd put money down on Musk ultimately profiting from the Twitter acquisition, which I would also bet was the actual goal the whole time.
