It's just bog standard genetics research. I really enjoy it, but it's mostly just pipetting and reading literature.
As for what you have to study if you want to get into this research, it's biology. BSc of biology, MSc in 'molecular genetics, cellular and developmental biology', and then a PhD under a mentor who does this kind of research. Then postdoc in the saem lab or another ageing research lab.
