You seem to be referring to the trilemma of epistemology
You take some statement X. How do you know X? Well because Y gives us X, and we have Y.
Okay, how do you know Y? Well because....
- An infinite chain, X<-Y<-Z<-A<-B....
- A cicular chain, X<--Y<--Z<--X<--....
- Y is self evident
Then we get the problems outlined by sextus empiricus. Such as "Y may seem self evident to you, but that doesn't mean it actually is self evident (and/or it doesnt mean it is true)"
