Who decides if the critic is acting honestly? The guy whose ego and paycheck rely on the critic being wrong? The European system (i.e. the Bologna accords) is
3 year bachelors + 2 years masters + 3 years ph d = 8 years

The US system is
4 years bachelors + 2 years masters + 3 years phd
OR
4 years bachelors + 4-5 years PhD

(all this assuming you go full time)

so they are comparable

I do research and run experiments at my job (fortune 50). If I have a narrative I want to support I can torture the data to make it say whatever I want. And I do that shit when I want funding for my projects, so does EVERYONE else. So yeah, I’m skeptical as shit when people start slinging “data” around.

Lets be honest here university educators/researchers are glorified government workers. Their wage comes from tuition which is subsidized/paid for by government loans and they make significantly more money than people in 'average' jobs.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why hicks don't give a shit what some government welfare baby publishes in an article on some subject they have no knowledge or care of.

Glad these people can figure out the mechanics behind bodily functions but they cant figure out why nobody gives a shit what is coming out of their mouths. Its actually fucking crazy to think of the entitlement/privilege you have that make you act like this

Well that's halfway true. Unlike the K-12 system in the US, in colleges the act of teaching is entirely neutral (In K-12 it is actively prevented, teaching, or at least teaching well, that is).
So what happens is you do get some professors who could very well advance in their position and do nothing but research but choose not to because they are truly dedicated to teaching, which is better than nothing I suppose.

This is from the UK isn't it? Once you graduate you can access PhD programmes witha good 2:1 or 1st. What happens is you start out on a masters track for the first year and you get choice to continue or cash in with a masters at the end of that year. If you continue to years 2, 3, 4 etc you can get your PhD. Typically a PhD is 4 years but some really driven people can do it in 3 years. This is all the UK system though. In fact, my own university professors say skip the masters if you want to go down the academic route and just join a PhD programme. It is NOT essential to do a masters or have one to then progress to a PhD. Masters are more like top-up qualifications for people already established in a business/work setting that want a higher qualification to advance e.g higher in that specialty or manager tier advancement.

It's even worse when corporations audit their tests themselves with their own staff and go "there we tested this thoroughly, see!" like Pfizer did with their vaccine ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8163337/ )
There's just such poor oversight in scientific communities now and I don't know how that happened when the internet allows every person to look at it at the primary source. It's a fucking joke.

I agree, the best scientists of the late 19th century to the 80s were generally on the fringe of society and ostracised by some regular academics. I think Tesla in particular had issues.
Before that, it was nobles using their free time (due to having money) investing that time in their curious projects. With welfare that might happen a little again, but I wouldn't consider feeding that behavior because it could just make them lazier too. It's a little bit of a tug of war between surplus money and that necessity to survive that really got the most results. Nobles tended to ignore such "noble pursuits" and those with no money simply had no time or opportunity to develop their pursuits.

I finished a masters in CS a few months ago. The research seminars and classes were interesting. You just read research papers. Tons of them. Most of the ones I read were related to ML and AI.

Also had to write a paper (unpublished) but just as meaty as any other I read. I did not have to defend anything or do a dissertation although I'm pretty sure that's what a PhD does.

It seems like it just prepares you for further studies and research.

I don't plan on doing a phD but I would if I had the time.

I should add that the MS didn't really offer anything useful for the private sector which is where I work (cybersecurity 165k salary if you are interested). I had the salary before my MS, and was well over 6 figures before finishing my BS.
