>>13606776>We aren't being taught (Renaissance) Latin anymore (this a big one, there is major evidence that language plays a role in our non-linguistic cognitive abilities).>Mass education has dumbed everything down to accomodate low IQ immigrants.>There is a lack of will to focus on excellence above factory education for professions, trades etc.>General decline of Western civilization.>Tech addiction.People who are saying that educated people today have as much knowledge as in the past are extremely ignorant. Read some biographies of late 19th century intellectuals. It is also wrong to assume specialisation is the issue. Even our top researchers are not on their level in specialized areas. How many professors do you know that reads every paper in every journal in their field? How many read every paper in even one journal? Many of these journals publish the volumes as they have for over 200 years, but we don't have nearly the same reading speed and comprehension anymore. We don't have the same memory recall either (we suspect due to the internet we have trained ourselves to remember less).
We are still making breakthroughs in many areas though. I don't believe that polymaths are necessarily better researchers, though of course they are better individials.
