Is it better to go for a degree in Math or CS? I'm torn between the two, I intend to go into CS but love and enjoy math.

It seems you can do CS after Math undergrad, but not the other way around.

I was thinking about that, but would there be a pathway from studying simulation to studying things in experiment? The math isn’t an issue, and I’m self studying solid state physics as we speak to make myself slightly more useful to any professor who wants to take a stray theory / math boy under his wing

I think if you can just look around and find a prof who is ready to take you into experimental research then that is good.If not then get into simulation .Keep learning solid state physics theory and experimentation though. I still think talking to a computer engg. prof working on quantum computing would be easier than convincing a physics guy.Ofc I am some anon on an imageboard so do not consider this advice too seriously.

Ive heard this go both ways desu. I’ve heard that they don’t care as much about your department in quantum computing as much as your advisor, and some of the big algorithms people are physics people like barrow and childs. On the other hand, vazirani in CS recently published a paper about how a complexity theory result gives some result in high energy physics. It isn’t experimental, but I hope I can do similarly interdisciplinary things.

CS is regardless the ticket for money, unless you use physics or math to go into finance. Cloud architects, security architects etc are all bringing home $200k+

Only reason to pursue a PhD in a STEM subject nowadays is if your love for the subject outweighs your desire for money, i.e. your desire for pleasure, security and safety, i.e your desire. for happiness. Which is why I cannot understand the people who follow that route and live in poverty instead of going into tech or finance and doing research in your own time.

I ran away from the STEM fields since i realised that most people lose their life into these degrees and they become autists and end up 35 yrs olds with a high paying job but no gf, virgins, no life or social experience, no cool life stories to tell your grandkids and even in work they get grinded because they’re betas. I was a nerd until 18 but then I realised that I hate the people there, I hate being lonely and sad and not being around women , not drinking or partying (with moderacy ofcourse) and just wasting my life for some high paying job that will pay me funko pops and steam vidya.

The only reason math majors think they can do CS is because they are at peak of mount stupid after taking their one programming class where they did some basic shit with if statements and a while statement. Its the same with electrical engineers. They take 2 classes and think they are masters at programming when they arent. I have read enough EE code to know they are *terrible* programmers.

You can recreationally enjoy the rudimentary aspects of CS and EE through things like building your own VR headset from the electronics to the heavy computational imaging side. Similarly, self studying math oftentimes leads to appreciating the rudimentary parts of math but failing to get into the meat and potatoes, especially since most math people motivate themselves to do prior to any higher education in it is literally just utility calculation.

Not to say you can't do great or proper self studying - this is essentially what you do after a PhD in order to actually break into a field you like. And you usually turn self studying at a national lab into an interdisciplinary project or paper. But simply suggesting to do it on the side doesn't really weigh in on a desire to do mathematics professionally

Okay I have trouble answering your question because idk what you really want you said you like abstract shit well I just don't think that applies to CS. CS is all of the different paradigms one could imagine, and any sort of data structure you could imagine, but what you imagine is also completely real. Any data/logic structure you think of can be used in a program and it might perform good or bad. Though you could certainly spend your time doing more business or more theoretical shit. Seems with math you can go the business route which might be complicated but still number crunching however you could still be coming up with your own algorithms n shit idk mang. I guess I'd say do the math because I can say with confidence I didn't need to go to school to learn a good bit of computer science and from what I've heard the courses aren't that great unless your school has a well known high quality CS department.

I honestly don't know where to start with math, calculus and linear algebra just seem like more basic stuff I only cared to skim over like no can't do it myself but I definitely understand it for the most part. I have no idea what mathematicians even do lol desu like I wonder exactly how many mathematicians are actually doing real math rn and what the hell are they doing

If you have the time to do it, double majoring is really fucking good for the math and CS combo. It’s not necessary, and you shouldn’t do it if it’ll take you a huge amount of extra time, but the subjects complement each other very nicely
