Correct. Mutations always naturally occcur, selective pressure drives the direction of the mutations by selecting for mutations that provide a survival advantage in the existing climate. A climate filled with hosts who all have identical and imperfect immune responses provided by leaky vaccines strongly selects for a resistance to the vaccine produced immune response.

I would support this, though I don't care about public safety, and it's not really the anti-vax take per se that irks me, because I think there are some legitimate concerns about vaccines. It's not true because natural immunity consists of multiple heuristics for virus identification and it variable among individuals. Two people who have been infected by COVID and developed immunity will have different sets of responses and their immune systems will be looking for more than just "is this the spike protein?". As a result, natural immunity is FAR less leaky and is a randomly distributed set of pressures instead of a single consistent pressure. A virus which evolves an advantage against person A's natural immunity will not have the same advantage against person B's natural immunity because their immune systems behave differently, whereas if a virus evolves to evade Vaccinated person C's response, it will have that advantage against every person who has had the same vaccine.

I also forgot to mention that this failure is only true for these current MRNA and adenovirus delivery vaccines because they only expose you to the spike protein. Traditional vaccines don't usually have this weakness because they use a compromised sample of the full virus and therefore produce similarly distributed responses as wild exposure does.

The variants weren't bred by anti-vaxxers, they came to highly vaccinated countries prepackaged and quickly spread among the vaccinated precisely because they out-competed the variants that didn't do well infecting the vaccinated. In other words, high vaccination rates actually allowed certain variants to spread even more efficiently because the variants they would have been competing with were wiped out.

Probably need to wait forever, covid plays out similar to the 2009 H1N1 meaning about 1/5 of the global pop gets infected and 0.01 to 0.02% of cases are fatal. Maybe the numbers go higher because covid has a higher r0 and we'll need more recovered population to stop the spread, but at the end of the day covid will be an endemic disease and might dethrone influenza as the seasonal "flu". I don't really understand it but apparently viruses have some competition for the same niche, so for example H1N1 lineage was king from 1918 until the 1957 H2N2 pandemic, and H1N1 cropped up every 30 years or so when the population was naive to it.
