Yes, I got that impression too lol. Only at a few points, but he did actually seem kind of exasperated

I've watched every Lex podcast and I think I've kind of figured him out:

- As everyone knows and as he says, he's naturally bad at talking
- When he's sleep deprived, he gets like 6x worse at thinking and talking

He's mentioned several times getting almost no sleep before particular episodes, and it shows. In the episodes I've seen where he's pretty coherent and alert, he seems a lot more rested

Please sleep more, Lex. At least before podcast episodes. This is your primary full-time job at the moment whether you like it or not

I understand if people enjoy some of the guests, but I don’t really see anything redeeming about lex fridman.
He’s completely out of his depth on the most basic research pushes in fields even adjacent to his “expertise.”
He’s a poor public speaker.
He falls victim to constantly saying something shallow he thinks is a profound connection, which is a byproduct of how much he apes off joe rogan.
One look of his PhD should be enough to know it’s not of publishable quality. It reads like a survey paper rather than any actual research. It’s been clear that he subsists off of daddy’s physics prestige to bail him out…seeing as how all of his academic credentials are from his dad’s place of work.
Seriously, take a look at the thesis. We make fun of piper harron (as we should) but even her cringe and ineptitude doesn’t stop that her name is on a thesis that has solved a new problem.
Knowing how little his PhD actually nets him, lex constantly stretches out muh MIT lecturer title even though it’s a farce.

It’s not hard to see how this constant bullshitting bleeds into the podcast. He’s constantly looking for validation by sitting next to industry names while wearing a suit. But to anybody who has even the faintest clue about anything technical that people claim the podcast discusses, it’s super clear that this is a grift operation masquerading as edutainment at the expense of the guest to give an abbreviated statement of purpose for their work. Or in the case of fellow grifters like Weinstein, circlejerk for 40 minutes.

It’s not even informative or inherently entertaining. All it ends up being is normie bait because it appears to be about a “smart” topic. The influx of entertainment that tries not to educate AND entertain but just instill a false sense of understanding to normies is legitimately a bad thing.

These last two seem to be the most important. It is a bit jarring when a conversation about Newton’s early life suddenly pivots to how nice of a guy Einstein is. I also think a bit of attention, practice or training could fix it.

And also, it isn’t totally true! The question about Huygens WAS a good followup question, not a stupid question at all. This is because the LISTENERS probably don’t know who he was. The mistake was making it partly about himself and his own knowledge — and the point here is not that it opens him up to ‘lol midwit’ etc — the point is to inhabit the audience and ask the questions thu probably have. Joe Rogan is insanely good at this, and it’s not just because he doesn’t know things — he’s very experienced with the medium and very attentive.

Lex gets good guests, has good reach, and these small things can be corrected with attention. Haters and trannies are, as usual, speaking out of envy.

Is he popular? He's obviously buying guests so he is also likely buying social media engagement. Wouldn't be surprised if most of the posts about him were made by someone for-hire. I've never heard anyone IRL talk about him and online it's only in very narrow situations where his name comes up. Contrast that to Elon Musk and Joe Rogan who I hear about IRL all the time and see mentioned widely. Even Isaac Arthur seems to have more real popularity.
