The inception of the idea that led to further work were derived from the fundamental curiosity, imagination, and fortitude to expand on that idea so that people can build upon them further. Mandelbrot is a great example of this.
Complexity and elaboration doesn't discredit the people who found the ideas in which were elaborated on later.
