Evolutionary, a man wants to fuck as many women as possible since that increases his odds of passing on genes. But this is the tricky part. What defines the best man? Well, in this day and age I'm not really sure. But all the millions of years that cultivated this instinct, the traits of an ideal mate were different than they are now. In tribal prehistory aggression was a desired trait, aggressive men were better at protecting their family and tribe. Beauty have always been desirable, mainly because what we see as physical beauty is a visual indicator of health. (Symmetric features, well developed musculature, lack of disfigurements, and so on) Healthy males just make better partners, and looks are a quick indicator. As for being rich I'm sure I don't need to elaborate. Popularity is a great attractor since it generally indicates a high status in a tribal culture, the benefits are obvious. And lastly, the oft spouted "confidence". Well, confidence is just a male unconsciously expressing contentedness in all these things.
