>>13487140AJR was doodling an idea for a conceptual engine. Lots of engines have been half-cooked like that over the years (RS-83, RS-84, TR-106, TR-107, etc). They get proposed, some introductory engineering work gets done, and then they get canned when the people writing the checks lose interest. The BE-4 had the advantage of having been in development for a few more years than the AR1 and was being internally funded by a company that had a solid need to see it finished (no BE-4, no New Glenn, no Blue Origin). AJR had more engine experience but a lot less certain skin in the game.
