I honestly know nothing about the Law route , however; part of me thinks the field is saturated in most aspects. Probably most of those graduates making 60k work for the state as a court lawyer. Also I would not hesitate to think that the 60k starting is misleading because of the job security and the promotions solely based off of time served due to it being governmental.

That being said , my career is in a whole other area of thought , so my knee jerk assumptions are probably wrong.

They have no idea what they are hiring for, they have a word like python, and they need to check you have the "python", do you do the python? you know the python? how many years have you done the python method?

I think what you are saying is true in that HR people have very basic filters for finding people, but my complaint is on the technical questions that are asked after the fact, which I do not think would be the same questions if a true labor shortage existed

STEM is unique in that it has subjects which do not require many resources (CS, math) so it can be easy to recommend, however I am weary of whether there is a true shortage, or if the shortage is just in specific groups (advanced research, minority groups) which will not be fulfilled even if many people decide to go into STEM

that being said I think it is essential to have some knowledge of basic math and physics which people do not get in high school (especially in the usa), but it may not be good for society if everyone decides to enroll in engineering programs, especially if it is not needed locally

industry jobs are very hard to get. Especially if you want to do anything with semiconductors or nano tech. Its nigh impossible with a master (I have tried) and they always say a undergraduate degree is worthless despite the master being nothing else than a glorified extension.

I truly don't understand why people think you need a PhD to be successful in a field. The only people who care if you have a PhD are other people with a PhD.

My sister is currently trying to get her PhD for weather or some bullshit because "its hard to find employment with a master's degree". She doesn't have some niche passion project that would require furthered education to develop, she's literally just going to school to avoid working. I'm sure when she gets her PhD she'll suddenly have the expertise to solve climate change though.

U.S. tax $ is helping sponsor my sister's dream of sitting at home reading wikipedia articles. STEM (most college degrees actually) are overflowing with kids who think money should just be handed down to them because they were "smart" enough to go to school instead of contributing to society in any noticeable way.

Just because you read material that genuine intelligence has produced, does not make you smart. If you were even remotely as capable as you believe yourself to be, you would be creating things instead of just trying to siphon off money from the government in the name of "science"
There is a STEM shortage; but that doesn't mean any moron willing to spend their parents'/government's money will be a suitable fit though. The whole "Nerds are Hot" culture in America sure bamboozled a lot of autistic crybabies.

Think about it like this... You're a company, and you're trying to grow your business. What do you do? You invest in research and development. For the past decade, company have had tons of cash to do so, particularly with all the stock buy backs.

In a shrinking economic time, it will be more important to minimize costs, and demand for engineering will shrink. Will it disappear? No, but it will not be easy times like it is now.

The companies say its because they have graduated with a good grade but have no idea how to do anything and almost all have poor social skills

I think they prefer to hire a social woman for min wage then have her outsource the different tasks overseas/experts

No one is deserving of funding their education, however nowadays in order to contribute something new to the field or be able to handle an R&D job you have to get to the frontier of the field and it’s a lot harder now than it has ever been. I’d say a Ph.D is a more meaningful degree than a bachelors or masters because it is a lot easier to get the knowledge of a bachelors/masters on your own.
