He assumes, based on available information, that the plague is currently not that bad--and it really isn't.
The gap in information lies in the fact that he isn't paying attention to your words, because you are an asshole who is not worth listening to.
Why should he listen to you, or believe you?
He's just going to get insulted and mocked for asking questions in a way that you don't like being asked.
