Besides the aesthetics, it recontextualizes the way he stands out narratively from everyone else in a pretty interesting way.
I also like the unique image in fan art of brilliant green eyes on somewhat olive-toned skin.
My controversial contention is that I actually think he'd have slightly lighter skin than is usually the case in fan art.
I get that if we're talking aesthetics and representation, darker skin may be preferable, but if we're talking trying to fit into the story, I think he'd be mostly white, since I think he'd be what were used to be called quadroons: Potter is an English name, and Western surnames are inherited patrilineally, so any Indian ancestry they could have must have come from an ancestor's intermarriage with an Indian woman, with those genes becoming less pronounced over time.
The alternative that would make James more unmixed Indian is if the Potters were an Indian family that took on an English name to better fit in, but that runs into the problem of how then they became an illustrious family. Most Indians who have historically become big important names in British society are the ones who already had their fortune when they spread their lineage west.
My other big contention is that they make him way too pretty, but that's also an issue with white Harry in the fanart. I personally think Harry should have an element of plainness to him. Radcliffe became pretty after puberty, but as a child, he was merely cute, and I think that fit well with Harry.
For most of the cast, the casting was perfect, and then they became hot. So sad. I think Emma Watson wakes up everyday so sad that she's considered one of the world's most beautiful women
