If you care for story, long rest very very often. You can pick "partial rest" and still engage with night time story without using up any camp supply. Especially in super early game as you pick up companions. (You can immediately rest after each companion you pick up)There's stuff for you to do at night before you even pick up anyone too. I had 10 rests before I even fought a single enemy after I landed. Get the "Camp Event Notifications" mod if you don't wanna worry about it.
Second thing is you can hold down Shift key to see enemy sight line so you don't waste a 'hide' and immediately fail.
Third is do not expect to experience the whole game in a single playthrough... I thought I was thorough with my second playthough and I'm still finding new things on my third.
