I think he wanted to have his cake and eat it too. Write the gay boy protagonists he'd been wanting to but leave it just unconfirmed enough that he can still also write them as extremely close friends. This also lets him probe at the unrequited love angle without having to actually explode their relationship.
We still get cute fanart either way, so it works for me.
