As for shotas from games and anime with canon aged up versions, it usually depends on the shota. Like Link usually grows up pretty nice, but often times it feels bland, like they just made them slightly taller and said they're adults now, and if the shota's character was just being the token shota of the group, then aging them up just turns them into entirely different characters, because they lose the main characteristic they were written around.
I also feel shotas going from younger shota to an older "end stage" of shota is pretty underrated, like a cute tiny innocent shota aging up into a confident attractive young teen that stills keeps some of the cuteness of the original design is so, so good. Gimmy from TTGL is a good example.
