It's one of the things Rem drills into him: he has to eat for his own health, and he shouldn't throw his life away even if he feels at a loss. Eat well, stay strong, tough it out.
Nightow in general likes drawing characters eating together, and uses it to show both intimacy and clashing personalities. I've never looked into it but I'll bet there was someone in Nightow's childhood who always pinched the best part of his bento. You don't just write Zapp out of nowhere. B3 also had a whole chapter about getting the right burger with a buddy and enjoying it in the right place. Really makes you think how Stampede Knives refusing to eat puts so much distance between him and humans compared to even the beyonders of Hellsalem's Lot.
