I guess it must be a culture thing. Some aspect of the zeitgeist then was way more accommodating to fujos, I don't know what. And exciting, too, since it wasn't nearly as close to mainstream as it is now, it felt like being part of a little club.
Plus, you didn't have to deal with anti-shippers. I've never actually been into any pro-ships, in fact, they gross me out most of the time, but still, it's nice to be in a space where you didn't feel a huge invisible crowd of people breathing down your neck all the time.
I've noticed that there are still fujo communities on Twitter, but they're way smaller and vastly more insular. The art is often way better, and significantly more explicit, but the vibe's just different, not sure how to explain it
