It used to be you could make a living as an artist doing realistic art (mostly in advertising, with some books on the side). Then photography got simple and cheap enough advertisers switched over to that instead. The entire industry was gutted, no new artists would train in realism because they couldn't get paid for it, and within a generation all you could get were cartoons even though the mass of people still wanted good illustrations.
Technology does great at bringing up material standards of living, but it's horrible for the arts.
