In the mostly lost video he made in the wake of Edd's, well, wake, he explained his relationship with Tom.
My mind made up the detail of Edd coming back and finding them just not talking to each other; same with the public space thing, they were actually on online voicechat: Edd got hit with the Technical Difficulties and dipped for a sec, leaving Tord and Tom to actually talk to each other for once and get to know each other, which let them know that they knew enough to want nothing to do with one another. Matters weren't helped by Tord making fun of Tom's religious views, or generally making fun of him in comic form, you know how sensitive he is (given what we know about him now, it's so weird that he was in the same social circle as fuckin OneyPlays).
