you say that he is fixated on gon and their friendship yourself. he is emotionally very dependent and he is quick to threaten violence and murder to anyone who wants to take that away from him. this persists and extends to alluka later. that he wants gon alive and well isn't selfish, but his wish to keep the friendship and what it gives to him is. two sides of the same coin.
maybe psychopath is the wrong word, but i don't know how you would call someone who wants to kill a man because of game, holds himself back and then murders two pricks he happened to come across to vent his frustration.
honestly i think i'm just playing to much of a devil's advocate here. i don't dislike him that much. at least he gets shit done. it's just that the motivations, goals and actions of the characters in this show are puzzling to me at times.
