Backstory on why the plot & characters were butchered in the anime adaptation:
In 2008, the manga had only been out for 2 years. There was not a lot of source material to adapt from, so they had to create original characters and then create their own non-canonical ending for Season 1.
The newer anime adaptations from 2014 & 2017 is amazing though, so be sure to try them out whenever.
