Anno was an art school fag who made all these short films about depression. He’s a very talented director, but the subject matter of all of his stuff is basically suicidal depression, and it will probably hurt you if you’ve ever dealt with something similar, contribute to your depression, and the worst part is you’ll probably think its helping at first.
Eva is a fun and exciting watch, a mecha show with some light horror, but Shinji is depressed through the whole thing.
Kaworu shows up and is a great character who has instant chemistry with Shinji in episode 24, and Shinji has to murder him in the same episode. Then episodes 25 and 26 is a surreal mental breakdown ending with Shinji congratulating himself for being alive.
Yes I did just spoil the show, and no I don’t have any qualms about it.
It’s genuinely unhealthy to watch.
Anno knew this while making the show, and was publicly very critical of otakus, which somewhat includes himself. He hated the pathetic parts of himself. The rebuild movies have had their finale and it’s basically just a shitpost.
There’s similar mecha shows out there with proud genki people who face life and all its absurdity with courage, and going back to Eva after that kind of thing, it’s just not an enjoyable watch.
Yes I am mad about Eva.
