You'd have pure aestheticists against practical genetic modelling, perfected balances of both, furries vs scalies, religious schisms, color splits and free mutagens vs cemented geneticals, cuteness vs beauty, dexterity vs strength, all fighting for the social schema superioris. In short, you'd have war, and then the winner would be what is left behind, usually the ones who had nothing to do with "perfection" in the first place. Hence, greys. Boring, big headed, goey, yet wanting for naught, and existing to be "entertained", if you could call it that, since they, again, wouldn't want for pleasure. Instead their curiosity would drive them, and they would mull over pieces of their identity, never truly grasping what it is, or "why they were" in the first place.
In short. Save yourself the heart ache, establish a PVP quadrant of the galaxy. Store all the peaceful different types of beings in their ideal planets, and find a universal power source, and leave the fighting to those that want the fight.
