To one of you, the fact that they lose their bodies means they're dead, but to the other, it doesn't mean anything because their souls are immortal and, at least Kaworu, always keeps his memories.
Rei, for example, died 2 times in NGE, but her same soul was harvested and put in a new vessel and just like that, she was "alive" again. And even though she forgot her memories, they slowly began to come back to her (her feelings for Shinji, her connection to Gendo's glasses, the reason for her tears).
So, to one of you, them losing their body vessels means nothing because "as long as Rei and Kaworu's souls are alive, they're still alive". And considering their souls are immortal, it basically means they can never really die.
