The series has veered away from depicting overt homosexuality since the 90’s: to the point where you could argue Eva itself has become homophobic.
Even in the 90’s, for as great as KawoShin is in the show, Kaworu dies horribly, murdered by Shinji, and Shinji loses his mind.
For the characters it’s actually a bit worse than a tragic trainwreck where they both die innocently: Shinji has his lover’s blood on his hands.
This series is not a healthy thing to watch
