After finishing the game, I agree that there should have been more Basil screen time, especially in the real world segments, but at the same time I feel like he would have just been a nervous wreck, caught between all his feelings. Like, before Hero shows up he really was ready to throw everything away.
Now, I'm no huge fan of Aubrey, and I definitely see the self-insertness of her after reading all the replies here, but I think the game is still better for it. In the ending monologue, where Sunny says that Aubrey is always true to herself, he is wrong. She hasn't been for 4 years. But I think the past 4 years threw everyone out of whack, and they stopped being themselves. I think he says it because by the end of the good route, everyone is back on track to being similar to how they used to be.
Anyway, sunburn shippers can rot.
