NGE is a decently colorful conflict with a handful of interesting characters, each with their unique motivations and personalities. There were a ton of blanks left in the lore in the original show, but with EoE and the directors cut version, those blanks slowly were more and more filled in, leading into the rebulids, and what Anno ended up doing with the rebuilds is reducing the entire show into basically this binary thing, Adam and Lilith: males and females, and their attendant typical gender roles. The entire thing just seems to boil down to Anno's self inserts (Gendo/Shinji) and his stand in for his wife (Yui/Mari).
I'm almost compelled to make a comparison to Yoko Ono, but I think Anno really is the one to "blame" here, although I'm not sure blame is the right word either, because of his struggles with depression and the fact that these works seem to be attempts at self therapy.
I'm just really disappointed.
