I didn’t leave him, Anno and his terrible creative control, cheap cgi, ridiculous character development left me.
As far as I’m concerned, Sadamoto stayed faithful. Anno just did waifu and husbando stuff like Mari or what they’ve reduced Kaworu to.
It’s just Anno since other franchises didn’t become trainwrecks like this.
