>>3577705>as if that wasn't familiar to her up until that pointI got this feeling since we got the camrip of the actual scene but I never said anything until today I guess because of all those "COPE" (you)s I could get but to me, it feels like Mari is finding Shinji after a very long time, maybe those 14 years it took Shinji to become an adult. My main reason to believe this is that as some nip mentioned in his review "Mari appears out of nowhere when she's needed" in this movie and while this can be a Mari Sue moment, her appearing like that at the end feels like that too. Something else is that if they were "together Marishin 100% canon" all those years then they don't really feel like a couple because I would expect them to actually show me more than just a few words and some hand holding. (This could be Anno keeping the merch alive tho)
If this world was rebuilt this makes it even more confusing to me. If they don't know eachother and yet Asuka, Rei, Kaworu and Shinji end up in the same city, then this is maybe the first time Shinji finds them and sees them, so now the DSS can be taken off, because he knows they have a normal life and since they are all in that city on current year then they might meet again at the station.
But if they all have jobs in this city then they go to the same station everyday and Shinji has been agonizing, stalking them like a creep everyday and watching them be happy without him interfering in their lives and then Mari appears and takes the choker off to say that that is enough and now either:
A) He is ready to go meet them again someday or B) he too can live his life without them and move on
This movie showing how much he cares for them and the theme being that "is a spell to become closer" and "goodbye is a way to meet again" would be completely irrelevant to the end scene if he's leaving everything behind
