I would like him more if he weren't supposed to be Kaworu, yeah. I'm not one of the anons who's interested in fighting people over it but if you tell me "this is Kaworu" I kind of want him to resemble the original more, you know?

I don't really like the manga's version of Shinji very much, either. People who hate Shinji for not having a lot of the usual protagonist traits push him as an improvement but the changes that make him appealing to that sort of person make him less of the unique character that I grew attached to in the original anime. I don't like Rebuild Shinji very much for the same reason.

The thing is it's just not that obvious in Kaworu's case, even after Q. I've seen a few shitpost videos of the fallout from this movie the comments have people who were somehow rooting for Kaworu/Rei despite never interacting in rebuild. Interesting. Homura's loop is a timeline loop where a new timeline is created after the current loop ends in failure. If the loops in Evangelion are the same, then nge, eoe, and rebuild would be different timelines but they'd be seen as a linear sequence of events from Kaworu's pov.

I still think, even after this movie, that this was the right choice. After Kaworu had his panic attack, to say everything he says to Shinji and cry would be a bit too much since he's trying to be calm here to tell him his last words. His panic before was enough to communicate what he felt in that moment.
I also like that the first time we see Kaworu cry on screen in when Shinji and him finally understand eachother completely, feelings and all.

Advertising is no excuse for us to disappoint ourselves, but the sheer volume of gaybaiting from khara was pretty egregious. Specifically one of the most slimy things they did during the 3.0+1.0 hype cycle was have kaworu appear over the "kiss" lyric in the one last kiss trailers. They absolutely knew what they were doing with that and how much of a lie it turned out to be.

This ending could have been kino because it would give more meaning to Kaworu's name being the bridge between humans and angels.

And it could even be a progression of Shinji and Kaworu's relationship being proof that humanity and angels can learn to understand/love one another.

But too bad the idea of angels and humans being essentially the same wasn't really touched upon in Rebuild.
