>>3559208>Let's start with Asuka, who is stripped away from all her edges in the fantasy of a heroine that could be saved by Shinji from her loneliness and issues and she'll be dere and grateful to him. They also remove Kaji's crush in her life to make her exclusively for Shinji as Rei's rival from the beginning. This is what happened in Rebuild in 2.0, they eliminated her crush with Kaji, made her a super generic tsundere who fell for Shinji and was 'saved' because he was nice. But actual Asukafags hated this.
At the end of the day, the fans gave him money and he suckered them for 14 years. They weren't even going batshit and ransacking his studio or sending death threats like they did in the Gainax days.
It's also immature of Anno to assume that so many Evangelion fans are just hikki otaku and not people, adults already living out their own lives.
If you have to fuck over your entire plot (including zero fucking character depth to your MC's end-game love interest, among other things,) just make a fucking meta commentary then you're not only incredibly conceited, but you failed as a writer & director.
Even moreso, you're a hypocrite if you continue to milk the franchise with spinoffs and merch (which Anno intends to do, if he sticks to his plans from that interview from a few years ago.)
We all know what Anno was trying to achieve here - does that make for an enjoyable, competent or comprehensible movie series in the long run? No, because even EoE, despite its backlash against otaku, did not throw story exposition, character development and nrarrative resolutions entirely out of the window to send a giant "fuck you message." That's just incredibly fucking petty & narcissistic for a director/writer/creator to do. I doubt many were expecting a shipping end anyway, just coherent story and a proper resolution to the characters would've been enough, and they couldn't even deliver on that.
