You may think it's BS, but that's actually how it's supposed to work. You see, by providing you guys the framwork for you to fanwank endlessly, he's giving you carte blanche essentially, without commiting himself.
Kawoshin was never real per se. But the hope of it was, and that's how he led you on.
Believe it or not, Asuka fans are in a similar situation in EoE, although Asuka and Shinji share more.
Contrasting it with Rei, there was something actual, concrete and actualized there in EoE, which Anno had to break down. Quite violently so, which is 3.0 and 4.0.
I think the way forward is for all fans, Rei fan and Asuka fan and Kaworu fan and Mari fan alike, to simply do what Rei fans did many years ago: accept reality.
The truth is that Anno does what he wants, and he has no obligation to serve your needs. He serves his own needs, and when he no longer cares, the needs of other figures in the production team come forth, like with Tsurumaki, who coincidentally, is an Asuka fan but not an asushin fan, which would explain kensuke and asuka, but also the copious amount of fanservice asuka gets in terms of importance upgrades and powers.
