You can always modify it so you don't look so girlish, unless that's your goal. But, I've found that the whole long hairstyles for men guides are for either that messy, unkempt look, or for really low buns with a lot of hair oil. They claim it looks professional, but I think it looks nasty when it's all slicked up.
