They are grouped that way because, in my opinion, Rei (real) and Kaworu will be trapped in Evas/separated from the trio most of the movie.
Asuka and Kaworu are looking to a different direction from Shinji, Mari and Rei, because it's the placement, they are all smiling satisfied so you hope it's a happier conclusion.
But pic related is also a fucking poster and have NOTHING to do with the content. Unless you interpret of "Asuka will meet Kaworu judged by their proximity, and Mari will be important to Shinji because she seems heading toward him."
