>>3486607So long as I count, you're definitely not the only person who thinks about this.
>maybe it's my autism speaking thoughNo, it kind of is rude. Losing a duel in the Yugioh universe tends to leave psychological scars, so rubbing salt in the wound with the 4Kids version of "get gud noob" isn't very nice. Then again, Jaden was more of an asshole than Judai, so I guess it fit.
I actually like how they translated for Manjoume. It was all so stupid and terrible that it winds its way back to entertaining, which works for the first 2 seasons. That combined with the voice robs him of whatever sense of cool he had - which wasn't much anyway, considering how the series itself, sub or dub, treats him so humorously, the dub more so though
You know a name change I really find just plain bad? Téa Gardner.
The point of the name changes was to make characters more familiar to a Western audience. Judai to Jaden fits well, Jonouchi to Joey makes perfect sense, I actually like that one better than Jonouchi, since, you know, Yankii. There are a few changes I think are even an improvement: Maximillion Pegasus is better than the original Pegasus J. Crawford, Sheila is way better for an Aussie crocodile than Karen, and Axel Brodie is the superior name to Austin O'Brien, since, apart from just being cooler, what are the odds a black guy has such an Irish name? The weirder name changes, like Honda to Tristan, and Asuka to Alexis, are ... weird. Odd how the Fubukis got a Greek theme for their names. Then, there's just the flat-out WRONG names, like Yami, which is an abominable mistranslation.
But Téa?
You ever met anyone named that? It's not a familiar name. They might as well have stuck with Anzu because if you told me that was the original character's name, I would've believed you. The spelling is also confusing, like hell Anglophones know how to use é. Just seems like they misspelled Thea, which is a way more common and less confusing name, why didn't they just go with that?
