I shouldve mentioned the differences between Taro and dude!Chie, and how they've contributed to why their lives ended up that way.
Taro's primary skill is brawling, intimidation a natural secondary - gonna face off with Taro? why bother showing up?
Taro's not a big tactical thinker IIRC Mad's Tumblr right. He does as he feels, thinks after, not before.
Chie, on the other hand, from what we've seen in the comic, her primary skills seem less direct.
Dealing with Taro and Arata (his introduction in #287-8) shows that she's good with distraction and misdirection, w/ a distinctly playful edge, indicating she enjoys it a lot.
That face she made in #287 tells me she's used to intimidating way scarier people than the Rat.
Whenever she turns up in unlikely places, apparently just having been there, watching the whole time, indicates a stealthy gait and a history of espionage.
The way she pins Mori against Taro shows a deft hand in manipulating the enemy, even against itself or similarly antagonistic factions, subverting their interests in her favor.
So it seems, her main assets are in the intelligence game.
And (going by what is likely canon given what she's said - though that is by nature suspect, considering ... it's Chie) this is all w/o having actually joined any big gangs.
Thing is: in the AU, Taro stayed, Chie didn't - why?
I think one possible reason is just their different natures. Taro feels, Chie schemes. Taro's in the moment, she's a big picture guy. Maybe dude!Chie had a taste of the lifestyle, asked himself what his future holds, and saw nothing good?
But dude!Chie lived aimlessly, caring about nothing and no one but Mori. Why'd he leave the only thing that gives her life fun and purpose?
Mori ... maybe something about her?
