I know this is an Eva thread so I'll be short but I started watching Sarazanmai after you mentioned it, and I've just finished it. I see what you were talking about regarding subverting the gay couple death trope, but damn did I get cucked by what I consider an unresolved overt gay crush plot point between two of the characters. Serious talk, the ultimate reason Kaworu is so popular is his unconditional love of Shinji. Most people who become obsessed with the series see themselves in Shinji, who is desperately lonely, seeking validation, and has nobody he can trust. (I'm convinced that this is the reason why Eva is considered the GOAT anime - we all see ourselves as Shinji, even when we're calling him a pussy for not wanting to get in the robot)

"Finding your Kaworu" sounds pretty depressing considering how it turns out for him in the show.

Does "finding my Kaworu" mean having a brief relationship with some really impressive person who shows an initial interest in you, being starstruck the whole time, and then never seeing them again? Sounds like a recipe for lifelong heartbreak. At least Shinji's actual life was only like, a week or two after meeting Kaworu.

I think his love for Shinji has to be at least partially a benevolent, nurturing love, rather than a physical one - after all, he's practically a god compared to Shinji.

They also said they think 3.0/2.0 Kaworu is evil, so their opinion is garbage.
The Kaworu clones have always been used offscreen as empty vessels to fuel the Mass Production Evas. Kaworu's soul is never transferred between them like Rei's is.

I've always seen Shinji and Rei's relationship as pure and platonic, since they're blood-related. Sort of like the inverse of his relationship with Asuka, where there's definitely sexual attraction but their emotional bond is unstable. His relationship with Kaworu is the best because there's both unconditional love and sexual chemistry.

We haven't seen Rei die in the rebuilds yet so there's no way to know. Rei II (who has lilith's soul) is still alive inside unit1.
