I think that there is a correlation between canon character designs and the amount of shippy fanart they get, because a lot of BL shows have characters that look and dress like normal boys.
But also, Yuri On Ice had CRAZY success, and not only did it have simple designs, Viktuuri is also canon. So that sort of disproves my theory lmao
