Kid goes against both his mentors because he still thinks his dad's redeemable, and he's proven right in the end. It's a stretch to go from that to trying to shank his nephew in his bed because he might be seduced by evil, then abandoning his friends and duty to go hide on Space Ireland.
Abandoning the expanded universe was a mistake.
