I didn't know it was an actual rumor, but I've wondered to myself a few times if that was the real reason for retconning his gender. Mostly because of Squalo and Tiziano, who seemed to be portrayed as a gay couple but never explicitly called one. Seems reasonable that Arakis editor wouldn't want to take chances with an actual canon lesbian relationship, and it's better than the official explanation of "too many girls".
