Never thought about that before but the series seems to build up to some paradigm shift in that world with whole the old age of gods and strength vs some possible new age of humans and kindness. Not generally of course, the series is too realistic for that, but in principle at least. Might be that the first kingdom that accepts a physically weak but mentally strong and smart person, even if it's just transitory, could be one of the first signs for such developments. Despa isn't just smart he's also Desha's brother and the second born son. So since none of them has kids he is literally the second choice if Desha is gone.
I assume there would be still some trouble but I can imagine some subarc in which he tries to keep things going while Desha is gone and maybe faces some problems but eventually realizes that it works out better than expected regardless.
