Polly was hired by Basil's parents to take care of both Basil and his grandmother. In two different instances Polly mentions how long she has been taking care of Basil. Two years and a "few months", which is an obvious inconsistency with the story. However, it makes sense that she was hired to take care of Basil for the same amount of time as she was taking care of the grandmother since his parents aren't there and by the time Polly was hired, the grandmother could no longer look after Basil. Two problems, one stone.
