It's easy to take a character and make them attractive, Japanese fan art does it all the time, but it's a lot harder and a lot more uncommon to do that while retaining the spirit of the original, and Mad did it with Yuudai.
Arguably, she also did it with Jiro and Taro, and the rest of the cast, but it's most noticeable with Yuudai because he started out looking and acting like a monster, and even now, there's something to love, but he's still ... such a bitch.
